Water (H₂O) is one of the most important substances on Earth. Every living thing—people, animals, and plants—needs water to survive. But what makes water so special? It all comes down to its tiny building blocks, called atoms. Atoms are like the LEGO pieces of the universe. Water is made of two hydrogen and one oxygen atom that stick together like a team. This combination forms a water molecule.
Because of the way these atoms bond, water has some amazing properties. One of the coolest things about water is that it can dissolve many different things, like sugar, salt, and even some gases. That’s why it’s called a universal solvent—it helps mix and carry important substances inside our bodies and nature.

Water can also change forms! It can be a solid (ice), a liquid (water), or a gas (steam or water vapor). This allows water to move through the air, land, and oceans in a never-ending cycle called the water cycle. Without water, life as we know it wouldn’t exist. That’s why taking care of it and using it wisely is important!
