Antarctica holds the record for the coldest temperature recorded on Earth (-128.6°F/-89.2°C). This extreme cold was measured at Vostok Station, a research base in the middle of the continent. Such freezing temperatures make Antarctica the harshest place for humans to live, with strong winds and almost no liquid water available.
The continent is covered by a thick layer of ice, which reflects sunlight and keeps temperatures low. During winter, Antarctica experiences months of total darkness, making it even colder. The air is so dry that it resembles conditions found on Mars!
