Is sorcery and alchemy real?

Sorcery and alchemy have deep roots in history and storytelling, but in the modern, scientific sense, they’re not considered real.

Sorcery, often linked with magic spells, supernatural powers, or contact with spirits, is part of folklore and fiction across many cultures. While people in the past believed in sorcery to explain things they didn’t understand, there’s no scientific evidence that magic powers like spellcasting or supernatural manipulation exist.

Alchemy, on the other hand, was a real historical practice. Ancient alchemists weren’t just chasing gold—they were early scientists, experimenting with matter and trying to understand how substances changed. While their goal of turning metals like lead into gold never succeeded in the way they imagined, their experiments laid the groundwork for modern chemistry. So in a way, alchemy evolved into a real science, just not the magical version you might see in fantasy stories.

People today still explore ideas from sorcery and alchemy through art, fiction, spiritual practices, or cultural traditions—but as far as science goes, there’s no proof of real-world magic or the mystical side of alchemy.

So while sorcery and alchemy are real in history, culture, and imagination, their magical aspects don’t hold up under scientific study.
