Were you always a confident speaker? If not, how did you overcome the (usually) inevitable nerves that come with public speaking?

No heck no. I was a nervous wreck. I still am sometimes. The best way to overcome fear and be confident is to genuinely believe in what you will say, be prepared to say it, and to focus on benefitting your audience. If you're trying to help other people through what you say -- and if you aren't, why are you speaking in the first place -- then you'll find your nerves will go away because the audience will respond positively to you.
